birthday for OFA, after 6 months for Penn-Hip, 1 year for GDC, do screening for
Legg-Perthe's Disease at 6 months of age
Where: Most
veterinarians are experienced in x-raying dog's hips. These films are then sent
to the registry for a reading. Many orthopedic and radiology specialists can do
the Penn-Hip films. The Genetic Disease Control registry is not yet accepting
Penn-Hip certification.
Stifles: For patellar luxation
How: Palpation
When: At 6 months of

veterinarian or orthopedic specialist can do this examination
Eyes: For progressive retinal atrophy
(PRA)
How: Eye examination
When: At 6 months of
age. Every year thereafter.
Where: By a
veterinarian who is board certified by the American College of Veterinary
Ophthalmologists for routine examinations.
DNA: For Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
How: Blood sample
When: Any time after birth

veterinarian can draw the blood. The blood sample must be sent to
OPTIGEN for results
DNA: For Von Willebrand's disease (vWd)
